Springtime with Sunshine

Join award winning Author, Film-maker and Zoologist, Kara Hagedorn, and learn about the amazing world of birds. Meet Sunshine, a rescued Red-tailed Hawk, and hear their heart-warming story of interspecies love and cooperation. Enjoy time in nature in the beautiful surroundings of Sunburst Sanctuary.

Kara shares the tender story of Sunshine, a Red-tailed Hawk whom she adopted in 1997, after the bird was shot and could no longer fly and survive in the wild. After several years of Sunshine constructing nests and laying unfertilized eggs, Kara placed two fertile chicken eggs in Sunshine’s nest. In this moving story of cross-species relationships, Sunshine hatched the eggs and accepted the chicks as her own.

Enjoy a nature walk with Kara and learn to identify local raptors and other birds. Explore the symbolism of birds as medicine in native traditions.

“Sunshine’s Surprise” DVD and Kara’s books, “Hawk Mother” and the sequel, “Sunshine’s Mothering Miracle” will be available for purchase. Kara will have a book signing as part of the event. This is a great opportunity to buy gifts for Mother’s Day!

Bring a sack lunch to enjoy, and a pair of binoculars. Kara has a few extra pairs of binoculars if you don’t have any.

Please register by Sunday, June 21. If that date has already passed, please go ahead and register to attend anyway! All activities are included for a sliding scale donation of $50-$60/Adults and $30-$40/Children ages 7-14.

To register online, click the Register button below. We offer two donation levels to choose from: Base or Sustaining level. These are sliding scale donation options, allowing you to choose the level that fits your individual means. Sunburst is a non-profit organization run solely on donations; your generosity is appreciated!

Onsite lodging and camping options will be available for an additional donation; make reservations in advance. Please call or email for details.
